I really value the ability to speak to people in their native language, which is sort of an unspoken rule in Cuban culture. It's a way to form a bond with someone... making them feel more at home. So what does this have to do with weddings you ask? Good question. Well I have a Name Sign and my fiance does not. It makes me sad because they're quite hard to get. In formality a member of the "Deaf Culture" has to GIVE you a name. I find this part quite fascinating. I was given my Name Sign by a little girl who was 5 years old at Phoenix Day School for the Deaf....
Yes that's me, no comments on how I look. Anyway... My name is a modified ASL "J" that goes around my bangs. Often name signs indicate something about the way the person looks, and honestly I've never been able to even THINK get rid of my bangs for fear of losing my "identity." I am sad because I cannot give my fiance a Name Sign, and I really wanted to use my name sign (as well as my voiced name) in our vows, but as "a hearing" person I cannot give my fiance a name sign of his own.
But I can still have a beautiful photo of us saying "I Love You"...
